- South Korea announced that their Northern counterparts recently tested the new "KN-06" SAM which is related to the S-300. The missiles are reported to have a range of 150 km and are launched vertically from clusters of two or three.
The obvious question for this blog, given Iran's close relationship with North Korea in the past, is whether or not the KN-06 is related to Iran's continuing work in producing their own domestic S-300 variant. Obviously only time will tell, but it's something that both Iran and North Korea watchers should keep their eyes open to.

Very odd that there isn't any article about Iranian air defenses in your blog Mr. Wright. You can start from Sayyad SAM and get to the newer ones like Mersad.
ReplyDeleteWell, honestly it's because I'm not familiar with air defence assets like radars and SAMs in the same way I am with ground systems. I definitely have a working knowledge, don't get me wrong, but I don't feel as comfortable with it as I do, say, with discussing armoured warfare.
ReplyDeleteThough writing about it would be the perfect exercise to gain more knowledge so I may start writing about them...
so I may start writing about them...
ReplyDeleteI look forward to reading your thoughts on the subject. And I am sure I speak for most of the regulars at RFI too when I say that.
Thank you for your contributions there, and keep up the good work on the Arkenstone, Mr. Ayyash ;o)
some close ups of the KN-06:

availabe imagery shows TEL with 3 Launcher tubes.. could this means that the missile is larger than S-300's 5V55 or 48N6 .
ReplyDeletesadly no images of fire control RADAR shown... so i can't verify its type, however if NK managed to made something like or at least integrate Russian 5N63 RADAR (Tombstone) with their missile.. it would be a great advancement ..and their KN-06 Battery is likely to be more capable and survivable than their current S-75, S-125 and S-200VE's.
Aside from those i'm kinda doubt that 150km range .. as far as i know NK have no known record of producing Solid propellant for their missiles, but if they did ..and managed to get at least as good as propellant in Russian 5V55 missile (240 Sec) .. it would be a great capability surprise .

ReplyDeletetubes of those TEL's are shorter than S-300 launcher tubes.
Thanks for the pictures Anon.
ReplyDeleteThere doesn't appear to be any specific features that points to Iran cooperating with North Korea on these two projects. That being said, I wouldn't rule anything out quite yet.
